Columbia was designed and built by Nathanael G. Herreshoff, of Bristol, Rhode Island, in 1899 for the defense of the America's Cup against Shamrock from England. She won easily, and did so again in 1901 against Shamrock II. Columbia was 130 feet long on deck, and put 13,000 square feet of sail into the wind; double that with the huge spinnaker hoisted. Because the hull was bronze and the topsides aluminum, the hull did not last for more than a few years before corrosion forced Columbia to be scrapped. Herreshoff-built yachts went on to dominate the next four America's Cup contests.
Columbia was the first model I had built, and a few more have been built to various scales. First at 3/8"=1'0", it was a monster at six feet long and six feet tall. The more recent models have been 1/4"=1'0", producing a model four feet long and four feet tall. Detail has ranged from pond yacht to museum quality.
The images below are of a moderate detail model delivered August, 2001.
